Friday night: Panners top Oilers

Staff report

The night of travel to Fairbanks was bad enough. But having to face a hot Alaska Goldpanners squad once they got there? That was too much for the Oilers to handle.

Peninsula dropped a 6-0 decision to the Goldpanners on Friday night at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

It was the fourth win in five games for the Panners, who moved to 5-3 and just one game behind the league-leading Mat-Su Miners and Anchorage Bucs. The Oilers dropped to 4-5 and 2 1-2 games behind the leaders.

The game belonged to Panners pitchers Drew Mitrisin and Cody Moffett.

Mitrisin got the start and the win, going 5 1-3 innings and giving up three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Moffett picked up the save, going the last 3 2-3 innings while giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Tim Proudfoot and Adam Sonabend provided all the offense for the Oilers, each collecting two hits.

The Oilers pitchers were able to keep pace with the Panners arms for a while. A.J. Quintero pitched the first five innings and gave up an unearned run on five hits.

But the Panners were able to jump all over reliever Brandon Warner. He gave up six hits and five runs — four earned — in three innings of work.

The five runs all came in the bottom of the seventh inning. The big blow in the inning was a one-out, two-run homer by Chance Abrath.

In the game, the Panners got two hits from Nick Catalano, Payden Cawley-Lamb, Nolan Meadows and Alex Rubanowitz in rolling up 11 hits overall.

The Oilers stay in Fairbanks to face the Panners at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
