Oilers take on Panners in Fairbanks

Posted: June 29, 2013 - 9:54pm

The Peninsula Oilers dropped games to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday night at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks.

The Oilers lost 6-0 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday in Alaska Baseball League action. The Panners have now won five of six.

The Panners are now 6-3 in the league and just one game behind the first-place Mat-Su Miners. The Oilers are 4-6 and 3 1-2 games out.

The Panners and the Oilers play at 2 p.m. today in Fairbanks.

On Friday, the Oilers played after driving to Fairbanks from the Matansuska-Susitna valleys all night.

The night of travel to Fairbanks was bad enough. But having to face a hot Alaska Goldpanners squad once they got there? That was too much for the Oilers to handle.

The game belonged to Panners pitchers Drew Mitrisin and Cody Moffett.

Mitrisin got the start and the win, going 5 1-3 innings and giving up three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Moffett picked up the save, going the last 3 2-3 innings while giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Tim Proudfoot and Adam Sonabend provided all the offense for the Oilers, each collecting two hits.

The Oilers pitchers were able to keep pace with the Panners arms for a while. A.J. Quintero pitched the first five innings and gave up an unearned run on five hits.

But the Panners were able to jump all over reliever Brandon Warner. He gave up six hits and five runs — four earned — in three innings of work.

The five runs all came in the bottom of the seventh inning. The big blow in the inning was a one-out, two-run homer by Chance Abrath.

In the game, the Panners got two hits from Nick Catalano, Payden Cawley-Lamb, Nolan Meadows and Alex Rubanowitz in rolling up 11 hits overall.

In a postgame radio interview after Saturday’s game, Oilers coach Kyle Richardson said Peninsula has to start doing more to support the pitchers.

In Saturday’s game, the Oilers again gave up unearned runs. This time, two of the four runs were not earned.

The Oilers also continued to struggle to put up a lot of runs.

Nathan Bannister got the start and win for the Panners. He went six innings and give up two hits and no runs.

Down 4-0 in the eighth, the Oilers loaded the bases with no outs, but were only able to put up one run. The Oilers also were able to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth with two outs, but could not take advantage.

Chance Abrath had two RBIs for the Panners, while David Fletcher was 2 for 3.

For the Oilers, Sam Moore was the latest pitcher to take a hard-luck loss. He worked 5 1-3 innings, giving up two runs — one earned — on three hits.

Tim Proudfoot led the Oilers offense by going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
