Oilers swept out of Fairbanks

Posted: June 30, 2013 - 10:12pm  |  Updated: June 30, 2013 - 10:16pm

The Peninsula Oilers were swept out of Fairbanks, falling 5-4 to the Alaska Goldpanners on Sunday at Growden Memorial Park.

The Goldpanners completed the three-game sweep with a four-run rally that took place without the ball leaving the infield.

The sweep moves the Panners to 7-3 in the Alaska Baseball League, just a half game behind the league-leading Anchorage Bucs. The Oilers are 4-7, four games out of first place.

The Oilers face the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in Anchorage today at 1 p.m. in the continuation of a game that had earlier been postponed.

The Panners’ winning rally took place in the bottom of the eighth inning, with the Oilers holding a 4-1 lead.

Reliever Colby Blueberg entered for the Oilers and got the first out before Rick Reigner reached on an infield single and David Fletcher reached on a bunt.

Blueberg then walked Casey Munoz and David Edwards to force in Reigner.

In came reliever Brody Greer, who got a fielder’s choice grounder from Chance Abrath, but Fletcher scored for a 4-3 game.

With runners on first and third, the Panners put on a double steal. Catcher Adam Sonabend faked the throw to second, then had Munoz leaning off third. But Sonabend’s throw hit Munoz. Munoz and Abrath scored on the error to give the Panners the lead.

Greer worked out of the inning without allowing further damage, but became the latest hard-luck loser for the Oilers. He got the loss for yielding two ground-outs and a walk.

The game did not start in such a bleak way for the Oilers. Peninsula took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Panners starter Mikey Ramirez. Noah Holmes homered with one out. With two outs, Dillon Dobson doubled and then scored on a homer by Sonabend.

The Panners got one back in the sixth inning off Oilers starter Billy Strode, who worked six innings and gave up four hits and a run.

But the Oilers got some insurance in the top of the eighth when Turner Clouse scored.

Dobson, Sonabend and Jake Alvarez led a 12-hit Oilers attack with two hits apiece. The Oilers left 10 on base, compared to four for the Panners.
