Oilers rally to top Chinooks

In a game where both teams struggled to take advantage of scoring opportunities, the Peninsula Oilers took advantage of an opportunity when they needed it the most.

The Oilers used a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 3-2 victory over the Peninsula Chinooks on Tuesday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Alaska Baseball League play.

The Oilers improved to 6-7 in the ABL, while the Chinooks dropped to 3-13.

Tim Proudfoot started the winning rally in the ninth with a leadoff double, then Taylor Tempel walked.

Andre Mercurio then showed how well he can handle the bat when he pulled back a bunt and slapped a single through the left side of the infield to load the bases with no outs.

But Jake Alvarez then popped up for the first out.

Mike Wieland then kept the rally going with a walk to score Proudfoot. Adam Sonabend then won the game with a single to right-center field.

The winning rally in the ninth kept one swing of the bat by Daniel Salters in the eighth inning from being the difference in the game.

Logan McAnallen and Dylan Silva had kept the Chinook off the board through the eighth. McAnallen pitched five innings and allowed three hits, while Silva allowed two hits in two innings.

But in the eighth, Salters hit a towering home run to right field to score Tyler Krahn and give the Chinooks a 2-1 lead.

The Oilers had 12 hits in the game, while the Chinooks had seven. The Oilers left 12 on base, while the Chinooks left eight.

The same two teams play tonight at 7 p.m. at Seymour Park.
