The victory gets the Oilers back to .500 in the league, at 7-7. That moves the Oilers up to fourth place in the standings, three games behind the league-leading Anchorage Bucs. The Chinooks fall to 3-14.

A.J. Quintero picked up his first league victory on the mound to improve to 1-1 in the league. He had gotten no run support this year, but Wednesday he showed he doesn’t need many runs.

Quintero pitched the first seven innings and gave up just one hit while striking out nine.

Quintero said in a postgame radio interview that his curveball was working well. Quintero said he normally doesn’t start batters off with his curveball, but “pitching backwards” worked Wednesday.

Quintero is listed in the box score as having thrown 105 pitches, but he said in the interview he felt fine.

When Quintero handed the ball to the bullpen, Oilers pitchers continued to control the game.

Colby Blueberg struck out the side in the eighth inning, the third time in the game the Oilers had struck out the side.

Brody Greer then shut the door in the ninth for his second league save, allowing one hit while striking out one.

Chinooks starter Mike Jeffreys picked up the loss despite a solid outing. He pitched 6 1-3 innings, giving up four hits and a run.

The biggest hit of the day for the Oilers came in the sixth inning, when Andre Mercurio tripled to score Kyle Hunt. The Oilers, who had five total hits, added an insurance run in the eighth.

The Oilers and Chinooks play again at 7 p.m. tonight.
