Thursday: Oilers nip Chinooks again

Posted: July 4, 2013 - 9:49pm

The Peninsula Oilers won their fourth straight game, nipping the Chugiak Chinooks 2-1 in 11 innings Thursday in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

It was the second walk-off victory in three games for the Oilers against the Chinooks (3-15). The win makes Peninsula 8-7 in the ABL. That was just two games out of first, with a late game between the league-leading Anchorage Bucs and the Glacier Pilots yet to be played late Thursday.

The Oilers go for the four-game sweep today at 7 p.m. at Seymour Park.

The Oilers put the leadoff runner on in both the ninth and 10th innings, but both times the game-winning rally was nipped in the bud when Peninsula failed to bunt the runner to second.

In the 11th, the Chinooks took care of getting the runner to second for the Oilers after AJ Ramirez started the 11th with an infield single. Ramirez then went to second on a passed ball.

The jam got even tighter when Dillon Dobson hit a grounder to shortstop Nicholas Covello. The shortstop tried to get Ramirez at third and was late, putting runners on first and third with nobody out.

David Olmedo-Barrera then hit a walk-off single to end the game.

Once again, Oilers pitchers got the job done.

Sam Moore got the start and lasted three innings, giving up six hits and an earned run.

The defense helped Moore in the first inning. The Chinooks loaded the bases with no outs. Center fielder Andre Mercurio made a sparkling catch on a looping liner from Tyler Krahn for the first out, but a run scored on the sacrifice fly. Ramirez then made a sliding catch on Ryan Shackleford to take away extra bases and multiple runs.

Travis Barnes came in for Moore and worked 4 2-3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. However, in the eighth, the Chinooks loaded the bases with two outs against Barnes.

Cody Repenning, the eventual winner, came in and got out of that jam with one pitch. Repenning would shut the Chinooks out for 3 1-3 innings, yielding one hit.

Ramirez scored the other Oilers run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.

Olmedo-Barrera finished 4 for 5 for the Oilers, while Ramirez was 3 for 5 and Mercurio was 2 for 5.

Collin Radack was 4 for 5 for the Chinooks, while Drew Turbin was 2 for 4.

Andrew Klausmeier took the loss for the Chinooks.
