Volleyball skills camp to come to area

All American Volleyball Camps and Peninsula Midnight Sun Volleyball Club are hosting a skills camp at Soldotna and Skyview high schools from August 6 to 8.

This year’s camp features two former Division I coaches, including Sue Woodstra, captain of the USA Women’s Volleyball Team that earned the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984. During her eight years with Team USA, Woodstra also led the team to the 1983 Zone Championships and three other top-five finishes in World Championship play.

Woodstra played professionally for the NEC Volleyball Team of the Japan League from 1984 to 1988, and three seasons with the Merrill Lynch/Reebok USVBA team that won back-to-back National Championships in 1985 and 1986. In 1993, she was selected as a USVBA All-Time Great, and was recently named to the USAV All-Era Team.

As a collegiate player, Woodstra was a standout for the University of Southern California and coach Chuck Erbe. She helped lead the Women of Troy to the 1977 AIAW National Championship, earning All-America honors in the process. When her playing career ended, Woodstra turned to coaching. She has coached at the NCAA Division I and II levels, as well as the international level, including as an assistant for the US national team.

Camp is open to players entering grades 7 through 12 next fall. The coach to player ratio is one to 12. Camp is limited to the first 48 applicants and is open to players from throughout the Kenai Peninsula.

Camp will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with a final session from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $140. Contact your high school or middle school coach, or coach Bruce King at brucek@ptialaska.net to sign up.
