Saturday: Oilers take down Bucs

The Peninsula Oilers topped the Anchorage Bucs 7-3 on Saturday in Alaska Baseball League action at Mulcahy Field to win their sixth straight game.

The win vaults the Oilers to 10-7 in the ABL standings. The Bucs are 12-8. Along with the Mat-Su Miners, there are three teams within a game of league-leading Fairbanks.

The Oilers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 2 1-2 innings, but the always-dangerous Bucs looked like they were going to attempt a comeback — until Michael Coates came in.

The Bucs cut the lead to 5-3 after four innings against Oilers starter and winner GJ Strauss, who went five innings and gave up five hits and three runs — two earned.

The Oilers grabbed a 7-3 lead in the top of the fifth, and Coates dominated in relief from there.

He gave up just one hit in four innings and recorded nine of his 12 outs on strikeouts. Coates struck out the side looking in the sixth inning, and struck out the side swinging in the ninth inning.

On offense, the Oilers continued to be more opportunistic, scoring seven runs while leaving just six on base.

Noah Holmes was 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run, while Andre Mercurio added a pair of RBIs. Taylor Tempel was 2 for 4, while Adam Sonabend scored a pair of runs.

For the Bucs, Andy Crowley was 2 for 4, while Michael Strentz had two RBIs.

The same two teams play Sunday at 2 p.m.
