Bucs silence Oilers' bats

The Anchorage Bucs defeated the Peninsula Oilers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mulcahy Field in Anchorage to snap a six-game winning streak for the Oilers.

The Oilers now sit at 10-8 in the Alaska Baseball League, 1 1-2 games behind the league-leading Bucs, who are at 13-8.

The Oilers’ offense had been on an upswing of late, but Bucs starter Andrew Sopko quieted the Oilers’ bats.

Sopko pitched eight innings and gave up just three hits, walking three and striking out two.

In the postgame radio interview on 1140 AM, Oilers head coach Kyle Richardson said the Oilers actually hit the ball pretty well, driving several balls to the outfield but only having three hits in the game to show for it.

He said it was just one of those days where the ball was not dropping. He said the key will be how the Oilers respond to the experience.

The loss went to Logan McAnallen, who allowed four hits and two earned runs in five innings of work. McAnallen walked three and struck out five.

The Bucs did most of their advantage in the fourth inning, getting three of their seven hits.

Michael Strentz, the only player in the game to collect two hits, singled to score Ryan Leonards and David Andriese singled to score Collin Ferguson.

In the eighth, Leonards touched up reliever Brandon Warner for a home run.

In the ninth with two outs, reliever Andrew Boes walked two to bring the tying run to the plate, but Mike Wieland struck out swinging to end the game.

The Oilers stay on the road to face the Chugiak Chinooks today at 7 p.m.
