Oilers, Miners battle in doubleheader

Posted: July 9, 2013 - 10:49pm

The Peninsula Oilers split an Alaska Baseball League doubleheader with the Mat-Su Miners on Tuesday evening at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer, winning the first game 6-4, then dropping the second 7-1.

The result leaves the Oilers with an 11-10 league record — still 1 1-2 games back of the Golfpanners of Fairbanks — and sitting in fourth place among a tight grouping at the top of the ABL standings.

Had the Oilers won both contests, they also would have been tied with Mat-Su in the standings, but as it is, they stand one game behind the Miners.

In the first game, the Oilers did most of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits.

Earlier, in the third inning, the Miners took a 3-1 lead, helped by a 2-run double by Gio Brusa, but the Oilers came back strong at the top of the fourth, as they went through 11 batters.

Kyle Hunt had a double that scored Turner Clouse, Andre Mercurio’s double brought Hunt and Michael Hoo home, Noah Holmes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Alvarez, and Mike Wieland scored on a sacrifice fly from David Olmeda-Barrera.

Clouse hit 2 for 3 with two runs, Mercurio was 2 for 5 with three RBI, and both Hoo and Alvarez went 2 for 4 with a run.

Colby Blueberg had the impressive win on the mound, pitching 3 2-3 innings with no hits or runs and one strikeout. Sam Moore started the game pitching with seven hits, four runs and three strikeouts in the first 3 1-3 innings.

The second game didn’t go as well for the Oilers.

The Miners had a barrage of runs (six) come through in the second inning, which left the Oilers working the rest of the game just to close the gap.

Nick LaFace led the inning with a 3-RBI triple, and three additional singles from Mat-Su players brought in the other three runs.

Midway through the inning, Oilers pitcher Dylan Silva was pulled with two outs remaining in favor of Travis Barnes. Silva took the loss with five hits, six runs and one strikeout in the first 1 1-3 innings, and Barnes ended the game with five hits, one run and three strikeouts.

The Oilers’ lone run came in the fifth inning, when Olmeda-Barrera scored off a single from Hoo.

On offense, the Oilers had four hits, as Taylor Tempel, Dillon Dobson, Hoo and Olmeda-Barrera each provided one apiece.

The Oilers will complete their five-day road trip with a 7 p.m. matchup with the Miners today, before meeting with the Anchorage Bucs on Friday at home.
