Bucs overcome Oilers in overtime

Posted: July 13, 2013 - 10:53pm

The Anchorage Bucs scored a dramatic, 10-inning 5-1 victory over the Peninsula Oilers on Saturday evening at Coral Seymour Memorial Park, helped by two doubles in the extra inning that scored three runs.

The Oilers had their opportunities, but 13 men were ultimately left on base.

Bucs head coach Tony Cappuccilli was ejected in the ninth inning for arguing with the umpire, although that may have been the catalyst for firing up his troops.

After getting a first-inning run, the Oilers were able to tie the game up in the sixth inning when Andre Mercurio hit a single that scored Kyle Hunt with two outs in the inning.

The game stayed with a 1-1 score throughout the next four innings. That’s when the Bucs struck.

A.J. Quintero pitched the first 6 2-3 innings for the Oilers (seven hits, one run, four strikeouts), but Michael Coates was put on the mound for the rest of the game, and in the tenth inning, Cedric Vallieres scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

After that, Collin Ferguson and Chase Compton both hit doubles that brought home three more runners.

Coates eventually ended up with the loss, with four hit, four runs, but eight strikeouts.

The loss leaves the Oilers with a 12-12 record in the Alaska Baseball League, five games back of the Goldpanners of Fairbanks (16-6). The Oilers will face the Bucs one more time today at 2 p.m. at Seymour Park.
