Twins eliminated from state tournament

The Twins were eliminated from the American Legion Alaska State Tournament after a 6-5 loss to Dimond on Saturday at Mulcahy Field in Anchorage.

After winning the third state title in program history last season, the Twins went two-and-out this year.

“They were pretty upset,” Twins head coach Gary Oliver said. “It wasn’t directed at anyone, they were just mad they lost two and were done for the year.”

The Twins, the No. 7 seed, came into the tournament with seven of nine starters hitting .322 or better, but the offense never got going in Anchorage.

The Twins were held to seven hits Saturday, while No. 5 Dimond had 10.

Jordan Clevenger pitched a complete game for Dimond, walking five and striking out five.

Clevenger and Grant Remmer each knocked in two runs as Dimond took a 6-1 lead after three innings.

“Today, we had some hard-hit balls, but they were right at somebody,” Oliver said. “Baseball, they always say, is a game of inches. Those inches were not falling in our favor today.”

Oliver said three that particularly hurt were a line drive to third by Dallas Pierren, a drive to the outfield gap by Tommy Bowe, and a liner to second by Bowe.

Pierren took the loss, going 5 1-3 innings, and giving up nine hits and six earned runs while walking four and striking out two.

Mitchel Daugherty finished up, giving up one hit and no runs while walking one and striking out three.

On offense, Ethan Oliver was 1 for 4 with a run, Hector Rivera was 2 for 5 with an RBI and stolen base, and Justin Wisnewski was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

The Twins lose Oliver, Shayne Miller and Tyler Fritz for next year. Fritz did not play at state due to a concussion sustained earlier in the season.

“Hopefully, the young guys have a year under them, and they’ll come back ready to do really well next year,” Oliver said.

Oliver thanked the community, the local businesses and the parents for everything they do to make the Twins program happen.
