Kenai celebrates Walker Cup victory

The Walker Cup is, indeed, one of the best events of the year. It is only fitting that the Walker Cup is now tied after nine years of competition at 4-4-1. This is a testament to the quality of play that each team exhibits during this competition.

I would like to congratulate our players for their outstanding play this year. Their 17 1-2 to 6 1-2 victory was well deserved. I would like to thank our captain Tommy Carver for an excellent job. He puts a lot of effort into this event each and every year.

Our players handled the pressure of this event very well. They played smart, consistent golf, which ultimately led to such a resounding victory.

The young guns of Soldotna will be a handful in future Walker Cups. They are an outstanding group of young men. They also handled the pressure of the Walker Cup well. They will indeed make their presence felt.

The old guns of Kenai really stepped up to the plate, improving each year. The experience that was on display this year was really outstanding. They played the best golf of the season at the right time. Congratulations, guys, on a job well done. You made us proud.

Now, let’s get ready for next year at our place. The young guns of Soldotna will show up.

Walker Cup team members this year included Gilbert Arellano, Mark Azzara, John Dahlgren, Gordon Griffin, Rene Alvarez, Chris Morin, Derek Kaufman, Truckee LeMay, Chris Murray, Todd Eskelin, Bob Sizemore, Doug Jung, Mark Griffin, Greg Harrington, Doug Haralson and Jack Darsey.

The course continues to be in great shape. With warm weather for such a long period of time we are having to water, not only at night, but during the day as well.

From 7 to 11:30 each morning we will continue the watering process on the greens and tee boxes and stretch it out as far as we can into the fairways.

I realize that this is an inconvenience. Please bear with us, we will return to a normal schedule as soon as possible. The greens are in excellent shape and are rolling very well. They will continue to get even better through the rest of the season. Come out and enjoy some great golf at the Kenai Golf Course.
