Kenai Club tourney a success

What a great round Ken Liedes had on the first day of competition at the Kenai Club Championship. Ken shot a red hot 75 on Saturday in windy, rainy conditions to take a commanding lead into day two. He was coming off knee replacement surgery in January 2012. I could see a steady improvement in his game throughout the 2013 season. On Sunday, Ken shot an 81 to hold off Gilbert Arellano who shot a two-over par 74 on the final day. Ken’s final margin of victory was three strokes over Gilbert. Derek Kaufman and Gordon Griffin tied for third at a distant 165 two-day total. Derek won Low Net while Arellano was second and Gordon Griffin was third. Noel Widmeyer is the club champion in the net division with a net of 146. Great Job, Noel!

Noel has been playing good golf all season. It was no surprise to anyone that Noel had such a great tournament. Dana Bassell won second Low Net with a score of 151, just five strokes behind Noel’s 146. Kirk Hyman won third Low Net with a score of 153, followed by Pat Bowen with a net score of 157. Jesse Wade followed with a net score of 159. As you can see, this was a very competitive tournament in both divisions. Ken and Noel, we are very happy for you both.

A very special congratulations goes out to Ken Liedes. Not only has he battled knee replacement surgery, he has maintained a very positive attitude this past season, each day, working on his game. He certainly deserves all of our congratulations. His 75 on the first day of competition was truly was a spectacular round. Not only did he have to battle weather conditions, he had to overcome major knee surgery which, as you know, is a very difficult to do mentally. We all have been pulling for Ken during his ordeal and we are all certainly proud of his accomplishment in the club championship.

On Saturday in the Donnie Morgan Club Championship, it was certainly nice to see Dick Morgan and Carol Morgan there at the turn to greet everyone. We want to thank you both for all that you have done for the Kenai Golf Course over the years. We did miss Shirley at this event and we hope she has a speedy recovery. Thank you for the phone conversation and all the good wishes you gave us. We hope to see you next year at our club championship.

I would like to give a special thank you to Gilbert Arellano and Best Transit Mix for their continued support of the Kenai Golf Course. They have provided material in the form of crushed rock that has helped us improve all of our trails and cart paths on the Kenai Golf Course. Without your help, this would not have been possible. Thank you so much.

The Ladies’ Clinic scheduled for this week has been postponed due to inclement weather. We have rescheduled for August 26 through the 28, 6 to 8 p.m. If you would like to sign up for the clinic, call the clubhouse at 283-7500. Instructors include Tommy Carver, Chris Murray, Ron Goecke, and Mark Griffin. The clinic will include shot and long game skills. On the final day, the ladies will play the course. This is always a fun and successful clinic and many choose to take it each month.

Some final thoughts on the Kenai Club Championship...It was really exciting to see so many people play very well. The competition was extraordinary. I would like to thank Doug Jung and Safeway for providing donuts and cookies for both Saturday and Sunday. Thank you so much for your support. I would also like to thank Jerry and Wanda Carlson for the terrific salmon and macaroni salad that we look forward to each year. Dick, Shirley, and Carol Morgan, thank you for providing cookies for all of us. It was special to see you at the turn.

Ladies’ Night is on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. It’s a fun event for all ladies regardless of experience.

The Kenai Golf Course is in excellent shape. The fairways are green, lush, and well defined. The greens are in terrific condition. The caribou have put on a great show this last week. The views are spectacular and the golfing experience if amazing. I know this because we hear it from our visitors as well as our local golfers every day. During the next month and a half, I encourage you to come out and experience Alaskan golfing at its best.

As always, see you on the course.
