CIA soccer opens with 3 wins

The Cook Inlet Academy coed soccer team, the defending Borealis Conference champions, opened up its 2013 season with three wins at the Kenai Soccer Fields from Thursday through Saturday.

Thursday, the Eagles opened up with a 7-1 victory over the Tri-Valley Viking Warriors on a soggy field. Brothers Riley and Timmy Smithwick each had a pair of goals, while Connor Leaf also had two goals. Andrew Hammond also scored for the Eagles.

Friday, CIA topped Delta 3-1. The Huskies were missing players due to ineligibility, but were able to take the lead with a strike in the first half.

“That goal was a wake-up call,” CIA coach Kenny Leaf wrote in an email. “It was the best thing that could have happened to us.”

Leaf wrote that despite being down, CIA remained patient and midfielders Nicole Moffis and Connor Leaf helped control the game. Late in the first half, junior striker Madison Orth touched the ball to sophomore striker Timmy Smithwick, and Smithwick equalized.

CIA continued to control the action in the second half.

“Mo and Coombes (seniors Mylon Weems and Caleb Coombes) really stepped things up in the second half on defense,” Leaf wrote.

In the 54th minute, Timmy Smithwick scored again for a 2-1 lead. CIA appeared to have a 3-1 lead, but a large dog ran on the field during play, negating the goal. Smithwick finished the scoring, and his hat trick, with a goal in the 62nd minute.

Saturday, CIA finished off the sweep in fine fashion by topping Nenana 8-1. Connor Leaf, Hammond and Timmy Smithwick each had two goals, while Riley Smithwick and Brady Hammond each contributed a tally.
