August was a good month at the Kenai Golf Course. Many exciting tournaments and clinics were held. The course is in great condition. It is probably as green as it has ever been. The combination of rain and sunshine has everything in excellent shape, so come out and enjoy some great fall golf!
The Kenai Open was on Saturday and Sunday. It was full of great competition. This event was sponsored by Mike Navarre and the Zan Corporation. Thank you to them for providing many of the prizes and gift certificates. It is special to have the support of such a great sponsor. In the Second Division, our net champion is Chuck Rupenthal with a two day net of 148. Second was Noel Widmayer with a net of 150. He beat out Joe Deveaux in a card back for second place. Closest to the Pin on Saturday was won by Chris Murray on hole five with 25’6”. Hole nine was won by Todd Eskelin with 18’11”. Aaron Cooper won hole 10 at 7’3”. Hole 14 was won by Skip Dove at 13’8”. Closest to the Pin on the second shot on hole seven was won by Chris Murray at 4’6”.
Sunday’s Closest to the pin on hole five was won by Jesse Wade at 25’2”. Hole nine was won by Todd Eskelin at 22’3”. Chris Morin won hole 10 at 2’7”. Chris also won hole 14 at 17’6”. Closest to the pin on the second shot on hole 18 was won by Joe Deveaux with 10’9-1/2”. Skins in the Second Division on Saturday were won by Joe Deveaux, Skip Dove, Dusty Steinbeck, and Chuck Rupenthal, each with two skins. Skins on Sunday in the Second Division were won by Chuck Rupenthal with three, Joe Deveaux, Kirk Hyman, and Tristan Anderson each with one.
In the First Division Chris Murray won first Low Net with a 138. Gordon won second Low Net with a 146, followed by Gilbert Arellano for third place with a 148. Chris Murray is the overall Gross Champion with a great two day total of 152. Gilbert Arellano, Chris Murray, and Gordon Griffin fought to the very last hole for the Gross Championship. Chris played outstanding golf both days and had a great come-from-behind victory. On Saturday Gordon Griffin and Gilbert Arellano shared the gross sidepot with rounds of 74, followed by Chris Murray who shot a 78. Chris was four strokes behind going into the second day. Saturday Skins in this division were won by Gilbert Arellano with three skins. Gordon Griffin, Greg Harrington, and Jesse Wade each had one skin. Skins on Sunday were won by Tommy Carver with three skins, Chris Morin with two skins, Chris Murray and Greg Harrington each with one skin. The best round of the tournament was also shot on Sunday. Chris Morin made a strong comeback after an opening round of 85 and parred this course with an amazing 72 on Sunday. Great Job, Chris!
The Atigun Cup Playoffs are set for this Saturday beginning at 9:10 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. The final point total for the top eight finishers is Chris Murray 88, Gilbert Arellano 81, Gordon Griffin 73, Doug Jung 67.5, Greg Harrington 64.5, Todd Eskelin 63, Mark Griffin 59.5, and Kirk Hyman 49.5. 36 holes will be played on Saturday, Sept. 8. Chris Murray and Kirk Hyman will square off in an 18-hole shootout followed by Doug Jung playing Greg Harrington. Gordon Griffin plays Todd Eskelin, and Mark Griffin plays Gilbert Arellano. The winners of these matches will have lunch and tee it up again for another 18-hole match. The final two matches will be played on Sunday. Please feel free to come out and watch the competition.
A big congratulations to Jeff Cocker and Bill Coghill for shooting their best rounds ever! Also, congratulations to Bob Sizemore who just returned from meeting his new grandchild. Way to go Grandpa Bob!
