The Nikiski football team outscored Seward 44-6 in the first quarter en route to a 56-6 Greatland Conference victory Saturday in Seward.

Nikiski improved to 2-0 in the league and 2-2 overall, while Seward dropped to 0-3 in the league and 0-3 overall.

Seward actually got on the board first, with Brian Morris throwing a 52-yard scoring strike to Zachary Martin.

After that, it would be all Nikiski.

Michael Stangel had three scoring runs before the end of the first quarter. Also, Cade Anderson threw a pair of touchdown passes to Hunter Holloway and Dylan Broussard returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown. It was one of seven picks by the Nikiski defense on the day — a defense which also did not allow Seward to accumulate positive yardage on the ground.

In the second quarter, Christian Riddall had a 4-yard run for a touchdown, and Stangel kicked field goals of 27 and 30 yards.

Stangel led Nikiski with six carries for 90 yards, while Riddall had six carries for 86 yards and Jesse Eide carried the ball six times for 68 yards.

The Bulldogs also were efficient through the air, with Anderson finishing 7 of 12 for 97 yards and no picks. Holloway finished with three catches for 61 yards to lead the Bulldogs.

Kenai Central 22, Kodiak 21

The Kards topped the host Bears on Saturday in Northern Lights Conference action, with a bad snap on a failed Bears’ extra point in the fourth quarter providing the difference.

The Kards improved to 2-0 in the league and 4-0 overall, while Kodiak fell to 1-1 in the league and 1-1 overall.

Kenai grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 31-yard touchdown run by Jace Daniels. However, with 1:35 left in the first, Kerry Powers tied it up with a 19-yard run.

Kenai took a 22-7 lead at halftime as Jace Baker scored on a 9-yard pass from TJ Wagoner and Chase Logan scored on a 3-yard run.

Midway through the second quarter, Daniels got hit in the side on an incomplete pass. He came back for just one play in the third quarter — a 7-yard run — and then sat out the rest of the game.

With Daniels out, Kodiak came back in the second half. Melvin Javier scored on a 66-yard run in the third, and the two-point conversion made it 22-15.

In the fourth, Javier scored on a 32-yard run. On the extra point, a bad snap was handled by the kicker, who pitched to Myles Wilson. Wilson was brought down at the 1.

There was still 10:28 left in the game, however. Kenai sealed the game with a drive of 6:43, before turning the ball over on downs with 49 seconds left on the Bears’ 25. Logan had all four first downs on the drive, rushing 13 times for 49 yards. For the game, Logan had 22 rushes for 148 yards.

It is nice to see local teams

It is nice to see local teams do wellin sports I am of the belief that sports tend to follow life both good and bad you will never win them all.The new way of teaching that you get a medal win or lose sets up a false belief in the real world 2nd is 2nd you are just the first loser.
