Weekend XC roundup: Palmer Invitational, ACS Class Challenge

Posted: September 7, 2013 - 11:31pm  |  Updated: September 7, 2013 - 11:35pm

PALMER — If the Palmer Invitational is any indication, the upcoming Region III Championships should be the Allie Ostrander and Levi Thomet show.

After that, who knows?

Kenai’s Ostrander and Kodiak’s Thomet ran uncontested throughout their respective races, and blazed to victories in the 4A events. Ostrander, the defending 4A girls state champion, posted a time of 17 minutes and 46 seconds, nearly a minute faster than runner-up Briahana Gerlach of Glennallen and about 90 seconds better than the Valley’s top finisher, Wasilla freshman Alex Mathis.

Thomet, another defending state 4A state champ, was about as dominant, tying a career-best with a time of 15:40. That was 48 seconds faster than Kenai’s Jonah Theisen, the runner-up.

There was no drama when the winner crossed the finish line. But after Ostrander and Thomet, and the long pause between runners that followed, the true race began.

On the boys side, Colony senior Brandon Schafer was among a group of 11 runners separated by only 50 seconds.

“Like always, the competition was pretty strong,” said Schafer, who finished sixth with a time of 16:45. “I’m grateful for it. Competition is the reason we can race fast. We push each other.”

Schafer was one of three Knights to place in the top 11. Fellow seniors Lyon Kopsack (17:05) and Boaz Sessom (17:12) finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

“I’m very grateful for how things are going. We got together over the summer and trained as hard as we could without injuring ourselves,” Schafer said. “I’m pretty excited to see how we stack up at the end of the season.”

Athletes and coaches often use the Palmer Invitational to see where they stack up in Region III. Grace Christian threw everyone a curveball, opting to run in the 4A race, rather than with its 1-2-3A rivals. West Valley, Lathrop and Juneau-Douglas also featured runners inside the top 15, but Schafer said the Knights are eager to be in the mix of teams with a shot at the big trophy at the Region III meet in Seward later this month.

“We’re working on it real hard, doing the best we can,” Schafer said.

Levi Fried (ninth) joined Thomet in the top 10, and the Bears placed three in the top 25. Kenai also had two in the top 10 with Jonah Theisen finishing second and Jordan Thiesen placing eighth. Four Kardinals placed in the top 25.

A group of underclassmen spent their race chasing Ostrander. Gerlach and Mathis, both freshmen, finished second and third. Soldotna’s Olivia Hutchings, a sophomore, placed fourth.

Colony freshman Cathleen Powers led the Knights with an eight-place finish. Fellow CHS freshman Elisabeth Bowker was 11th. Palmer was also led by a freshman. Ruby Woodings finished ninth.

Three-time defending state champion Wasilla placed a pair of runners in the top 10, but continued to battle adversity with a midseason that’s been plagued with injury.

The Warriors ran again without junior Peggy Mathis, a member of two state championship teams. Senior Mariah Burroughs, a varsity runner throughout the three-peat, ran for the first time in about three weeks Saturday.

“Peggy and I are doing as much as we can. Everybody’s doing everything we can do get ready for state, so we can work as a team,” Burroughs said.

Alex Mathis has emerged as the front-runner for Wasilla. Mathis won the Bartlett State Preview early in the year, and has notched runner-up finishes at the Skyview and Colony invitationals.

“She’s what our team really needed,” Burroughs said of Mathis. “We graduated so many seniors.”

Junior Riley Burroughs has also emerged as a top runner for the Warriors. She was 10th for Wasilla.
