Palmer girls, Homer boys win Kenai Invitational swimming

The Palmer girls and Homer boys swimming and diving teams notched team victories Friday and Saturday at the Kenai Invitational at Kenai Central High School.

The Palmer girls scored 105 points to win the meet, while Soldotna finished second at 77 and Kenai Central was third at 59. Also from the Kenai Peninsula, Seward was fourth at 41 and Homer was fifth at 36.

On the boys side, Homer tallied 99 points to win the meet. Soldotna was second with 82, while Kenai was third with 69. Also from the Peninsula, Seward was sixth with two points.

The Palmer girls won four individual events and two relays en route to grabbing the title.

The Soldotna girls got three individual wins and also won a relay in finishing second. The Stars opened up the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Alex Weeks won a pair of events for the Stars, taking the 50-yard freestyle in 25.05 seconds and then winning the 500 freestyle in 5:20.37. Soldotna’s other victory came from Kaitlyn Groleske, who won the 200 individual medley in 2:24.82.

The Peninsula also got individual wins from Homer’s Jasmine Lewis, who scored 171.95 points to take the diving event, and Seward’s Isabel Barnwell, who won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.81.

Homer rode three individual wins and a triumph in the 400 freestyle relay to glory on the boys side. For the Mariners, Remi Nagle won the 200 individual medley at 2:19.86, James Nagle won the 100 butterfly in 56.58, and Mark Nagle captured the 500 freestyle in 5:28.54.

The Stars picked up two relay victories and four individual victories in cruising to second place. The Stars started out the boys meet when Chase Corona-Cain, Jacob Creglow, Dustin Hunter and Daniel McElroy raced to victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.79. Later, the Stars also won the 200 free relay.

McElroy finished off a solid day by taking the 100 freestyle in 51.61 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.19. Hunter won the 50 freestyle in 23.77, while Corona-Cain won the 100 backstroke in 1:02.40.

Jacob Dye and Bill Ashwell led the Kenai boys to third by notching the lone two individual victories for the home squad on the day. Dye won the 200 freestyle in 2:05.67, while Ashwell scored 207.30 points to take the diving competition.
