Kenai football game cancelled

Both JV and varsity games the Kenai Central football team were scheduled to play have been cancelled.

The Kenai varsity team was scheduled to play Valdez on Friday at 4 p.m., but with injury and illness taking a toll on an already struggling Buccaneers squad (0-6 overall), coaches made the decision to abort.

The Kenai JV team was supposed to face the Nikiski JV squad today, but the players will be travelling to Eielson with the varsity team as they Bulldogs get set to take on the Ravens in a Greatland Conference matchup on Saturday.

According to Kenai assistant coach Jim Beeson, Valdez is down to only 10 healthy players.

“It’s just different, you know, I’ve been doing this for 26 years, and me and (head coach) Jim Dawson sat down and tried to figure out what to do with a bye week,” Beeson said. “It affects how we’re going to prepare.”

The good news is the loss of a game will not affect the Kardinals when the Northern Lights Conference teams are reseeded for the postseason, since Valdez is a Greatland Conference squad in the small-schools division. Kenai stands at 4-0 in the NLC.
