Homer, Seward drop football games

The Lathrop Malamutes used a 28-point second quarter to blow out the Homer Mariners 49-0 in Homer on Saturday. The loss didn’t affect Homer’s Northern Lights Conference record (1-3), but it dropped the Mariners to a 1-5 overall mark.

Homer quarterback Sheldon Hutt once again used an aggressive passing game in an attempt to penetrate a tough Lathrop defense, but only got 141 yards on a 12-of-30 completion rate and two interceptions. Surprisingly, Homer was held to 16 yards of rushing, small numbers for a team that is historically known for their smash-mouth style of football.

Homer is now tied with Houston for the final NLC playoff spot with identical 1-3 records, setting up a crucial game with each other next Saturday that will decide who plays on and whose season is over.

Barrow 20, Seward 6

The Seahawks were eliminated from the small-schools playoffs with a loss against the visiting Whalers on Friday, dropping their Greatland Conference record to 1-5, and 1-6 overall.

Barrow’s victory was huge for them as it lifted them into the fourth and final Greatland Conference postseason spot with a 2-3 record, which puts them even with Voznesenka. Barrow gets the tiebreaker off a 46-6 win over Voz earlier in the season.
