SoHi netters edge Homer in 5 games

Staff report

Peninsula Clarion

The visiting Stars earned a hard-fought non-conference victory over the Mariners on Tuesday in Homer, winning with game scores of 25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 and finishing off with a 15-9 game.

Individual stats for Soldotna were not immediately available on Tuesday, but SoHi coach Emily Kenagy said outside hitter Makayla Wong, setter Julie Litchfield and middle hitter Taryn McCubbins all stepped up their games to grab the win for SoHi, which was missing powerful middle hitter Katelyn Kerkvliet.

Homer drops to a 2-4 overall record, but coach Beth Trowbridge said she was pleased with the way her squad played.

“I think that fourth game hurt our confidence,” Trowbridge said. “It was kind of neck and neck from about 18 points on, and we barely lost, and instead of having momentum we went into game five a little fatigued and doubting ourselves.”

Zoia Basargin led the Mariners with 17 kills, Tayla Cabana had 12 kills, Kyla Pitzman notched four service aces and seven blocks, and libero Maggie Koplin tallied 35 digs.

Homer faces Kenai on Friday in a rematch of their Peninsula Challenge championship game, which Homer won. Soldotna plays Grace on Friday, before taking on East on Saturday.
