Soldotna volleyball sweeps Nikiski

The visiting Soldotna volleyball team defeated Nikiski 26-24, 25-19 and 25-16 on Monday in nonconference volleyball action.

Soldotna coach Emily Kenagy said Katelynn Kerkvliet and Makayla Wong had strong nights attacking, while Kerkvliet and Makenna Rosin did well blocking.

“Everybody got to play tonight, like they did Saturday,” Kenagy said. “Everybody did great.”

Kenagy also said Nikiski has made big strides since the beginning of the season.

“Nikiski has improved a lot since we first saw them at the Homer Jamboree,” Kenagy said. “They did really well playing together as a team.”

Nikiski coach Stacey Segura also saw that improvement.

“I’m very happy with how we played tonight,” she said. “We competed very well with Soldotna.”

Segura said the Bulldogs are working on consistency in confidence and shortening the spurts where the team’s youth shows.

“Even though our team is young, we are moving in the right direction,” she said. “As long as we keep working on our confidence and fine-tuning, we should be ready to go for regions.”

Rachel Thompson had 11 assists for Nikiski, while Jodi Cook had six kills and three blocks, and Laura Hufford had 25 digs.

The Stars are off for the rest of the week. The Bulldogs play at Seward on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
