Homer wrestling takes 2nd at The Altercation

The Homer High School wrestling team took second place Friday and Saturday at The Altercation at Houston High School.

The Mariners scored 155.5 points, while champion Valdez had 170.5. Also from the Peninsula, Nikiski had 87 and Voznesenka had 13.

Jared Brant, wrestling at 106, picked up the lone championship for the Mariners. In the title match, Brant won a 14-1 major decision over Jamison Titus of Hutchison.

Also for Homer, Calvin Johnson (113), Jaime Rios (120) and Danny Rios (195) were second. Jadzie Martin (98) was third, while Ravi Cavasos (126), Dakota Alward (145), Pedro Ochoa (152) and Jordan Reynolds (195) were fourth.

The Bulldogs received titles from Nathan Carstens at 132 and Luke Johnson at 195. Carstens notched an overtime, 5-3 victory over Eielson’s Nate Ezell at 132. Johnson pinned Homer’s Rios at 195.

Also for the Bulldogs, Tylor Handley was third at 138 and Michael Stangel was fourth at 160.

For Voznesenka, Gavril Kalugin nabbed third at 132.
