Soldotna's Alex Weeks finished second in the girls 50-yard freestyle and took third in the girls 100-yard freestyle.

Kaec Brinster of Homer captured the gold in the boys 1-meter diving event at the state Alaska swimming and diving state championships in Juneau, the best result of Kenai Peninsula athletes.

For the first time in meet history, the state meet was held somewhere other than Anchorage. The Dimond Park Aquatic Center in Juneau hosted the event to positive reviews, and local teams managed to stake their claim.

Soldotna and Seward finished in a three-way tie with North Pole for 10th in the girls teams standings with 18 points apiece, while the Homer boys also finished tied for 10th, with Colony, with 15 points apiece.

Brinster won the diving title by raking in a combined score of 389.85 points. Kenai Central’s Cole Gross — last weekend’s Region III diving champion — finished second with 371.35 points.

Homer diving coach Harmon Hall said he was not surprised that Brinster could muster up a performance like he did, but his fourth-place finish at the region meet left him as an dark horse in the event. Hall said the winning dive was a forward one with two twists.

“His best dive actually was his lowest score,” Hall said on Saturday. “It was a different story this week, he had over 100 points in his last three dives. It was all about height.”

Brinster’s teammate Brian Rowe finished fifth with a score of 351.15 points.

Alex Weeks was .03 seconds shy of becoming the first Soldotna swimmer to win a state final in 10 years, finishing second in the girls 50-yard freestyle to Martha Hood of North Pole with a time of 24.19 seconds. Weeks also took third in the girls 100 freestyle in a time of 53.53 seconds.

Rachel Henry and Daniel McElroy also made the finals for their events — the girls 100 breaststroke and the boys 50 freestyle, respectively — and ended with eighth-place finishes.
