Kotzebue wins Peninsula Duals

Homer leads Peninsula by claiming 6th

Kotzebue defeated Colony 36-31 in the championship dual meet to win the Peninsula Duals on Saturday at Nikiski.

Friday, the 16 teams wrestled dual meets in order to get seeded in Saturday’s bracket.

In the third-place dual, West topped Palmer 44-34. In the fifth-place dual, Kodiak notched a 45-33 victory over Homer. Homer made it to that dual by topping Houston 45-27, losing to Colony 64-9, beating Colony 2 45-32 and beating Seward 53-28.

The battle for seventh saw Skyview top Seward 54-28. Skyview beat Kodiak 2 82-0 before losing to Kotzebue 60-24, beating Kenai 58-30 and losing to Kodiak 51-36.

Seward beat Dillingham 45-37, lost to West 73-12, beat Nikiski 42-31 and then lost to Homer.

Also from the peninsula, Kenai lost to Colony 80-6, beat Houston 45-42 and lost to Skyview. Soldotna lost to West 78-9 and lost to Dillingham 54-18.

Nikiski lost to Palmer 61-15, beat Unalaska 48-24 and then lost to Seward.

Several Peninsula wrestlers put together great tournaments. Jadzia Martin of Homer went 7-0 at 98 pounds, Austin Craig of Skyview went 7-0 at 106, Seth Hutchison went 7-0 for Skyview at 113, Calvin Johnson of Homer went 7-0 at 113, and Terrance Annogiuk of Seward went 7-0 at 120.

Also, Paul Steffensen of Kenai was 5-0 at 126, Tylor Handley of Nikiski was 4-0 at 138 and 145, Bailey Blumentritt of Skyview was 7-0 at 145, Michael Stangel of Nikiski was 5-0 at 152 and 160, and Luke Johnson of Nikiski was 5-0 at 195 and 220.

On Friday, the schools wrestled to determine their placement in the Saturday bracket.

In those duals, Kenai topped Seward 46-36, Palmer defeated Homer 51-30, West topped Houston 55-16, Colony 2 defeated Unalaska 60-24, Homer defeated Soldotna 78-12, Nikiski beat Soldotna 48-18, Skyview topped Kenai 56-27, Unalaska topped Kodiak 2 46-30, Colony 1 defeated Kotzebue 37-27, Palmer topped Houston 42-42, Colony 2 beat Seward 52-28, Kodiak 1 beat Dillingham 49-27, Kodiak 1 topped Skyview 55-26, Nikiski defeated Kodiak 2 42-30, Colony 1 topped Dillingham 78-6 and Kotzebue defeated West 45-36.
