Paul Steffensen named outstanding wrestler at Lancer Smith

Posted: November 24, 2013 - 12:20am

Kenai Central freshman Paul Steffensen has started his career with a bang.

Steffensen was named the most outstanding wrestler at the Lancer Smith Memorial wrestling tournament at Palmer High School on Saturday.

Steffensen defeated Gavin Alvardo 5-0 to win the title at 126 pounds. Alvardo was the most outstanding wrestler at the Class 4A state meet last season. Steffensen won his other matches on pins.

“It was just ... wow,” Kenai Central coach Stan Steffensen said of his son. “He was able to do it. What a blessing. Sometimes you don’t get the opportunity, so it’s a challenge. He was barely seeded, he was a sixth seed, and he beat a third seed and a second seed.”

Seth Hutchison of Skyview also brought home a title to the Peninsula. Hutchison won at 113 with a 4-3 victory in the final.

The Lancer Smith Memorial was billed as the state’s biggest and toughest prep wrestling tournament of the regular season, and the tournament delivered. A total of 424 athletes from 38 different programs competed in the two-day meet. That’s roughly double the size of the 4A state championships.

In the final round, a combined 11 defending small-schools and large-schools state champions, wrestled for individual titles Saturday.

South won the team title with 189 points. From the Peninsula, Skyview was 13th, Kenai was 14th, Homer was 22nd, Nikiski was 28th, Seward was 30th, Soldotna was 31st and Voznesenka was 35th.

Other placers from the Peninsula were Skyview’s Austin Craig taking third at 106, Homer’s Calvin Johnson taking fourth at 113, Skyview’s Bailey Blumentritt taking third at 145, Seward’s Terrance Annogiuk taking fifth at 120 and Kenai’s Kyle Hunter taking sixth at 182
