Weekend hockey roundup: End of the Road Shootout, Kenai trip to Fairbanks

The Houston hockey team won the End of the Road Shootout on Saturday in Homer.

There was a three-way tie after the round-robin, four-team event was completed. The tie was between Juneau, Houston and Homer, all with 3-1 records. Houston won the title based on goal differential.

Homer went into the final game of the tournament undefeated, but lost 4-2 to Juneau. Logan Moser and Grant Ainsworth put the Crimson Bears up 2-0 in the first period.

Clem Tillion, assisted by Konstantin Reutov, cut it to 2-1 in the second, but Zach Hebert and Chase Barnum scored two quick goals for a 4-1 lead.

Homer’s final goal came from Kiril Sanarov, assisted by Owen Delehanty and Dawson Roberts.

Neal Chapman had 19 saves for Juneau, while Markian Polushkin stopped 25 for Homer.

Saturday, Homer started the day by claiming a 2-1 victory over Houston. Anton Kuzmin scored with 12:15 left in the second period to give the Mariners at 1-0 lead.

Houston came back to tie with 13:27 left in the game when Jon Ball scored on an assist from Jon Lovelace. The game-winner came with 9:24 to play, when Konstantin Reutov scored on an assist from Tommy Bowe. Rhys Jones had 25 saves for Houston, while Riley Swanson made 15 saves for Homer.

Also Saturday, Juneau shut out Hutchison 4-0 on 27 saves from Neal Chapman. Zach Hebert had a pair of goals to lead the Crimson Bears. Daniel Slane made 24 saves for the Hawks.

Friday, Homer came through with a 2-1 victory over Hutchison. The Mariners had 41 shots to Hutchison’s 13, but thanks to the work of Hawks goalie Daniel Slane (39 saves), the game was tight until the end. Homer grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals in the first five minutes of the third period. Konstantin Reutov scored on an assist from Anton Kuzmin, then Kiril Sanarov scored unassisted. Thomas Lees scored unassisted for the Hawks with 8:33 to play, but Markian Polushkin (12 saves) kept a clean slate the rest of the contest.

Also Friday, Houston notched a 5-2 victory over Juneau. Mikey Spidal and Jon Lovelace each netted a pair of goals for the Hawks. Lovelace also had a pair of assists. Liam McDermott made 18 saves for Juneau, while Rhys Jones had 24 stops for Houston.

Kenai hockey takes two in Fairbanks

The Kenai Central hockey team defeated North Pole on Friday and Lathrop on Saturday on the road to improve to 5-3-1.

On Friday, the Kardinals received hat tricks from TJ Wagoner and Jake Eubank in a 7-3 victory over North Pole.

Both Wagoner and Eubank also added two assists. Also for Kenai, Dalton Dosko had a goal and three assists, and Nathan Zorbas had three assists. Ross Hanson also added an assist.

Nate O’Lena made 24 saves for the Kards.

Saturday, the Kardinals kept their offense in gear by topping Lathrop 11-5.

Wagoner had five goals in the contest, while Eubank had three goals and four assists.

Also for the Kards, Hanson had two goals and an assist, Conner Johnson had a goal and an assist, Zorbas and Dosko had two assists, and Isaac Mese, Michael Tilly and Keir Wilshusen added assists.

Nate O’Lena and Justin Alvey combined for 22 saves.

Weather stops Soldotna

Soldotna was scheduled to play South on Friday and Chugiak on Saturday, but neither game was played due to bad weather in the Anchorage area.
