Steffensen wins at North-South duals

Kenai Central freshman Paul Steffensen once again came away the victor against South Anchorage’s Gavin Alvarado, doing it in Saturday’s North-South meet at Wasilla High School.

Steffensen edged Alvarado — last year’s Outstanding Wrestler at the Alaska state tournament — in a 2-0 decision in the 126-pound championship bout. Two weeks earlier, Steffensen beat Alvarado 5-0 at the Lancer Smith tournament at Palmer.

The Kardinals took 10th place in the team standings on Saturday with 48 points, while Soldotna finished 14th with eight points.

Kenai’s Matt Vandermartin also had an exceptional tournament, pinning South’s Andrew Concepcion in 26 seconds in the third-place bout of the 126-pound division.

Brennan Girard of East High took Outstanding Wrestler honors on Saturday.
