Stars sweep Panthers in endowment games

The host Skyview Panthers were swept by the Soldotna Stars in two endowment basketball games Tuesday night at Skyview High School.

The SoHi girls won a 43-23 game, while the SoHi boys won 52-43.

Senior Katelynn Kerkvliet led the Stars in the girls game, posting 18 points — 16 coming in the first half — as SoHi built up a 32-2 lead at halftime. Haley Miller added 11 points of her own. Meghan Powers led Skyview’s effort with 10 points, helping the Panthers to 21 second-half points.

The boys game proved to be a little closer, as Soldotna used a 19-point second-quarter effort to stake out a 29-19 lead at halftime. Skyview attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter by outscoring SoHi by 10, but the Stars held on.

Senior Daniel McElroy led Soldotna with 13 points, while Jacob Carlson topped Skyview players with 17.

The Skyview boys will compete next to officially open their season at the Petersburg Little Norway Tournament on Thursday, taking on the host team Petersburg at 7:45 p.m.

The Soldotna girls will face Mt. Edgecumbe at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Kenai River Challenge tournament. The Soldotna boys will take on Juneau at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at the Powerade/Al Howard Tipoff.
