Nikiski opens basketball season with loss

The Mt. Edgecumbe Braves pulled away in the second half of a 78-41 win to beat the Nikiski Bulldogs basketball team Wednesday night at Nikiski High School.

Senior guard Seth Carstens’ 16 points led the way for Nikiski, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Mt. Edgecumbe duo of Skip Shipton and Jaloni Pepper, who put up 29 and 28 points, respectively.

It was clear from the get-go that the Braves were not going to make it easy for Nikiski, outscoring the Bulldogs 21-8 in the first quarter and staking out a 36-21 lead at halftime.

Any hopes of rallying back from the 15-point deficit were quickly put to rest for Nikiski, as Mt. Edgecumbe notched 42 second-half points, compared to 20 from Nikiski.

The Braves are on the Peninsula for the SoHi Powerade/Al Howard Tipoff tournament this weekend, where Nikiski will face the Colony Knights at 5:15 p.m. today.
