The Kenai Central alumni team will look to snap a two-game losing streak to Soldotna on Saturday at the 18th annual Hockey Alumni Game at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
Warm-ups are at 6:30 p.m. while the game starts at 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children, students and seniors.
The money raised helps the Kenai Central hockey team with travel costs, and helps players who otherwise would not have the money to play.
Kenai Central had won four straight before the current two-game losing streak.
Both sides have rosters loaded with players who advanced to the junior level, and some who went beyond that level.
Rick Koch, the chair of the Alumni Game Committee, said some highlighted players for the Kards are Brian Gabriel Jr., Brad Fusaro and Kegan Kiel.
Gabriel Jr. played four years with Holy Cross College, while Fusaro played a pair of seasons with the Junior A Kenai River Brown Bears before playing for St. Mary’s University in Minnesota. Kiel also played with the Brown Bears.
In addition, Kenai’s Adrian Borchgrevink played for the University of Oklahoma, and Phillip Ischi has seen ice time with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL this season.
Koch said the Soldotna squad will be led by Lee Green and Anthony Zurfluh. Zurfluh played pro hockey, including spending some time with the then-Anchorage Aces.
Green made the United States Hockey League in high school, then played four years for the University of Alaska Anchorage. He played pro hockey after that, including three seasons with the Alaska Aces.
Soldotna player Branden Fisher also spent time in the USHL and with the Brown Bears. Clayton Glick also played for the Brown Bears, while Hunter Sirois also saw time in the North American Hockey League, including 22 games for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs.
There will be action on more than just the ice. Santa Claus will be there to hand out treats to kids, while there also will be turkey bowling and sumo wrestling between periods. Two of the participants in sumo wrestling will be Kenai Central athletic director Stacia Rustad and SoHi AD Matt Johnson.
ConocoPhillips is the event sponsor. The company donated money to bring the cost of playing down for the players.
