Kenai River Brown Bears forward Alec Butcher was named the Midwest Division Star of the Week on Monday by the North American Hockey League. It is the fifth time this season a Brown Bears player has earned the honor, and the second time Butcher has been honored.
Butcher, 19, of Anchorage had the game-winning goals in both games as the Bears picked up a weekend sweep of the Minnesota Magicians at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex. Butcher also had an assist in both games.
Butcher, listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, is the leading scorer in the NAHL, with 48 points in 41 games.
“I thought Alec and his line was very consistent all weekend and did not make a lot of mistakes,” Kenai River head coach Geoff Beauparlant said in a released statement. “He prepares very well. He had a solid week of practice and it showed in the games. He finds the areas in the offensive zone to create offense.”
Rookie forward Matt Rudin also had a big weekend for the Bears and received honorable mention.
Rudin had a pair of goals in each game to up his totals to 12 goals and 13 assists in 40 games played.
