Saturday hoops roundup

Posted: January 25, 2014 - 11:14pm

The Soldotna boys hoops team split a pair of contests this weekend — losing to Colony 46-26 on Friday, then beating Houston 51-40 on Saturday — leaving the Stars with an 8-4 season record.

Soldotna converted 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter — including seven from senior Colton Young — to ice Saturday’s game. Young led SoHi with 17 total points, and went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe overall. Brooks Furlong added 15.

The Stars took a 23-21 lead into halftime, but when the third quarter ended, Houston had taken a 38-33 lead.

However, Houston’s free throw shooting is what bit the Hawks in the end, as the Hawks sunk only six of 21 from the line. Soldotna dominated the fourth quarter by outscoring Houston 18-2.

Soldotna senior Daniel McElroy was missing from Saturday’s lineup due to SAT testing.

CIA improved to 5-0 in the league and 6-1 overall.

The Eagles actually trailed 24-20 heading into the third quarter before posting a 25-12 advantage in the fourth quarter.

CIA coach Justin Franchino said Wasilla Lake sat back in a zone with big man Connor Knowles guarding the basket, and the Eagles were cold from the outside.

Timmy Smithwick paced CIA with 17 points before fouling out.

For Wasilla Lake, Braden Thorn had 19 points and Knowles added 13.

Seward girls 28, Grace 25

The host Seahawks held on for a Southcentral Conference victory Saturday.

The teams scored the exact same amount of points in each quarter, except for the second, when Seward outscored Grace 12-9.
