Kenai, Homer skaters battle to OT

After trailing for much of the game, the Homer Mariners hockey team scored three times in the third period to send Tuesday night’s game with Kenai Central into overtime, where the Kards got the winning goal to grab a 6-5 victory in Homer.

Kenai freshman Ross Hanson netted the gamewinner in overtime with just 2 minutes, 35 seconds left on the clock.

Junior Jake Eubank had a hat trick for Kenai, scoring his trifecta of goals in the first and second periods. Homer’s Kiril Sanarov had two goals of his own, both in the third period that brought the Mariners up from a 5-2 deficit.

Sanarov’s teammate Tommy Bowe scored the tying goal with 2:07 left in regulation.

The loss drops Homer to a 3-5-2 conference record (fifth in the conference), and the win improves Kenai to 5-4 — tied with Soldotna for third place in the conference.
