CIA cagers sweep Lumen Christi

The Cook Inlet Academy hoops teams continued to roll through the Peninsula Conference with a sweep of Lumen Christi, Friday at CIA.

The CIA boys took an early lead against the Archangels and never looked back, cruising to a 53-20 victory that helped establish their position in the conference standings with a 7-0 record (8-1 overall).

"We want the number one seed, we want a bye," said CIA coach Justin Franchino. "If that means being undefeated in conference, so be it."

Timmy Smithwick led the charge with 18 points, while teammate Mylon Weems added nine. Lumen was topped by Joey Brown with eight points.

Lumen Christi, a smaller team composed of younger athletes, struggled with sloppy ballhandling and turnovers, while also giving up rebounds to the Eagles.

"Great defensive effort tonight," Franchino said. "We played a young team, they were down a few guys with injuries, so I thought Lumen did a great job with the personnel they had. Years down the road, this young team will be a lot better.

"We have an older, more experienced team so that was the outcome tonight."

CIA held Lumen to four points in the first quarter, and only three in the second. The squeeze on defense resulted in the Eagles holding a 28-7 halftime lead.

Straight from the start of the second half, CIA continued pushing, and pushed its lead to 37-7 by the midway point of the third quarter. When the game was clearly in hand, Franchino began giving his bench players experience.

"This was a great opportunity for those guys to show me, hey, I belong out here," Franchino said. "One guy that did great out there was Andrew Hammond, the little guy. He probably got 10 steals tonight, and he's been a big boost for us.

"Adam Uchtman, who hasn't been playing very long, he's the big guy, and the crowd was really responding to him."

Cook Inlet senior Nicole Moffis scored 24 points to lead the Eagles to the conference win Friday night at CIA. Teammate Ashley Hammond contributed 13 points as well.

Moffis had 18 points by halftime, but Lumen's Tori Kruger edged Moffis with 25 points of her own. Unfortunately for the Archangels, no one else managed more than eight points.

CIA led by two points after one quarter, and pushed its halftime lead to 34-23. CIA eventually pulled away in the third quarter by outscoring Lumen 16-12.
