KPHA squad loses in quarterfinals at nationals

Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association was eliminated from the USA Hockey Tier II Girls 16U National Championships on Saturday in Amherst, NY.

The Ice Hawks, who had finished 2-1 in pool play to advance to the quarterfinals, lost 4-1 to Charles River (Mass.).

Charles River jumped to a 4-0 lead in the game, getting a first-period goal from Jamie Burke and getting a pair of second-period goals from Elena Kapolis and an additional tally from Julia Neelon.

In the third period, Elizabeth Cho broke up the shutout for KPHA with a power-play goal, on an assist from Cheyenne Matson.

Samantha Morse made 18 saves for the Ice Hawks, while Jessica Olivieri had 16 saves for Charles River.

Friday, the Ice Hawks completed pool play with a 3-1 victory over the host club from Amherst.

KPHA jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first period when Lauren Cardwell scored on an assist from Hannah Hartwell.

In the second period, Amherst came back to tie it when Olivia Rutkowski scored, on an assist from Kailyn Burke.

But KPHA came back about three minutes later with the game-winner. Cho scored on assists from Whitney Wortham and Sierra Longfellow.

In the third period, Anna Wrobel gave KPHA a two-goal cushion with a power-play goal.

Amber McDonald had 15 saves for the Ice Hawks, while Julianna Kersten made 24 saves for Amherst.
