Ostrander keeps cranking out the best times this state has seen

Posted: April 19, 2014 - 10:03pm

The Kenai Central boys and Soldotna girls won team titles at the Homer Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Homer High School.

The Kards scored 128 points for the win. Anchorage Christian Schools was second with 97, while Wasilla was third with 96.

On the girls side, the 111 points for the Stars put them over the top. Kenai was second with 81, while ACS and Wasilla tied for third with 69.

The Kenai boys were led to the win by a dominant distance effort from Jonah Theisen, who won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

In the 800, Theisen crossed the line at 2 minutes, 2.35 seconds, just .13 better than runner-up Micah Hilbish of Skyview.

In the 1,600, Theisen ran 4:27.93, a new best for the state. His brother, Jordan, was just .05 behind.

Then in the 3,200, Jonah won at 9:49.10, while Jordan was at 9:51.97.

The Kardinals also got a victory in the shot put from Mason Lloyd. His winning throw was 40 feet, 10 inches.

Nikiski’s Seth Carstens was the other multiple individual event winner from the Peninsula.

Carstens won the high jump at 5—8 and long jump at 19—2 3-4.

Tim Duke won the triple jump for Skyview in 41—4 1-2 for a new state best. The Panthers also claimed a victory in the 3,200-meter relay. Logan Hemphill, Brenner Musgrave, Daniel Shuler and Colton Yancey turned in a time of 8:52.95.

Connor Seay had the lone victory for the hosts, taking the 300 hurdles in 43.50.

In the race for the girls team title, Kenai had four individual victories to Soldotna’s one, but the Stars were able to prevail with depth.

Makayla Wong had the lone individual win for the Stars, tossing the discus 109—8. That is the best toss in the state thus far this season.

Soldotna also picked up a win in the 1,600 relay, with Daisy Nelson, Lindsey Wong, Olivia Hutchings and Dani McCormick teaming for a 4:21.88.

Kenai was led by Allie Ostrander, who kept right on trucking after proving she is one of the best distance runners in the country last weekend in California.

Ostrander won the 800 in 2:18.47; the 1,600 in 4:55.32 for a new state best and the 3,200 in 10:19.17, which didn’t better her previous state best.

State records can only be set at the state meet. The record in the 3,200 is 10:37.7, while the 1,600 record is 4:55.89. There also is a 4:55.3 hand-timed, converted mile on the books.

Also for the Kards, Kiana Harding took the high jump at 4—6.

Skyview got a win from Hayley Ramsell in the triple jump. Her winning leap was 30—1-2.

The Panthers also won the 400 and 800 relays. In the 400, Kaylee Fisher, Heather Tolliver, Ramsell and Carajean Gibbons ran 54.59, while in the 800 Sabrina Hames, Jessie McNamara, Haille Landess and Ramsell ran 1:54.87.

Arianne Parrish won the long jump for Nikiski at 15—2 3-4.

And Tayla Cabana got a victory for Homer by running the 100 hurdles in 16.86.
