Bird Homestead golf report

Posted: June 4, 2014 - 10:42pm

Can the weather get any better for golf?! Clear sunny skies, no smoke in the air, and a light breeze to keep off the mosquitos. With the help of Mother Nature Larry Hamilton has got the golf course in tip top shape; greens are gorgeous, fairways are fabulous, and tee boxes look tremendous. It is the ideal time to get a nice relaxing round of golf in.

Ladies Night

Last Wednesday night we had some amazing talent for ladies night. The winning team of the dynamic duo, Kelsey Slough and Pat Bird, had a score of 41. Faith Link had a stellar performance on hole No. 5, you would’ve thought the Hulk hit her tee shot after seeing how far her ball landed. With her awesome drive, Faith won longest drive. Kelsey Slough focused in on her putt on hole No. 5, drained it, and won long putt. Ladies, come join us for an evening of fun Wednesday nights at 6:30. Don’t worry if you aren’t a good golfer, the format is best ball. Don’t have clubs, but want to play? We have clubs you can rent for the evening.

Men’s Night

Tuesday night we had a great group of 19 men show up to play men’s night. Shhhh, don’t tell their wives, but I think they came out as an excuse to get out of the house, have a break from the women, and enjoy some sunshine, all while playing a round of golf. Don’t worry wives, our turn is Wednesday nights.

The first-place team had a great score of 4 under par. The team consisted of Roy Bird, Mike Gardner and Duane Tachick. Not far behind them was the team of Brandon Wold, Mark Orth, Trevor Baldwin and Greg Harrington, with a score of 3 under par, winning them the second-place slot.

Did he just get help from an eagle who swooped up his ball, dropping it on the green?! Nope, it was pure skill. Greg Harrington hit his tee shot on hole No. 6 less than 4 yards away from the hole, winning him closest to the pin on 6. Harrington continued to prove he was a force to be reckoned with, he could not be stopped. Greg crushed his drive on hole No. 3, winning him longest drive.

Men’s night is every Tuesday at 6:30. We always love to see new men at Bird Homestead.

Junior Golf lessons

Due to the great success of our free junior golf lessons last year, organized by the Bird Homestead Golf Association, we are glad to announce we will be continuing the program this year. Mark your calendars for Thursdays starting June 26-July 17 from 6:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. All juniors from the ages 6-16 are welcome, no experience needed and clubs will be provided during the lessons. Rob Fraser and other association members will organize and teach these lessons. These lessons are a great way for juniors to learn the exciting game of golf. We love seeing youngsters learn this wonderful sport, and why not have them learn for free?

Please contact the golf course at 260-4653 to sign up.

Fun Fact Thursday

The word “golf” does NOT stand for “gentlemen only, ladies forbidden.” That is an internet myth. In fact, about 23 percent of professional golfers are female.
