Saturday: Oilers take down Monarchs

The Peninsula Oilers improved to 4-1-1 overall Saturday with a nonleague win over the Lake Erie (Michigan) Monarchs at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

The Oilers continue the four-game series today when they host the Monarchs at 2 p.m.

Sean Mason picked up the victory for the Oilers, pitching six innings and giving up six hits and three earned runs while walking one and striking out seven.

Cody Richey pitched three innings for the save. He gave up three hits and one earned run while striking out one.

The Monarchs took the early lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, JJ Reimer doubled, the Kyle Fiala walked. Caleb Stayton then singled for the 1-0 lead.

But the Oilers came right back with a seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning to take control of the game.

AJ Hernandez walked to start the inning, then Jordan Sanford singled. With one away, Gabriel Munoz then walked to load the bases.

Ethan McGill, Sean Mason, Sandy Sandlin and Carter Yagi then both walked to push home runners. Jeff Paschke made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly, then Hernandez doubled for a 7-1 lead.

After the Monarchs cut the lead to 7-4 with two runs in the sixth and another run in the eighth, the Oilers got two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. McGill walked, then, with two outs, McGill and Carter Yagi took advantage of errors to score on a Yagi single.
