The American Legion Twins finished up their home slate with a sweep of Palmer on Saturday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

Both games were scheduled for seven innings. The Twins won the first, league game 8-4 before invoking the mercy rule after five innings in an 11-1, nonleague triumph.

The local nine moves to 14-1 in the league and 26-6 overall with the most important part of the schedule yet to come.

The Twins play top teams Wasilla, South and Dimond on the road Thursday, Friday and Saturday before starting the state tournament next week.

“It prepares us for the state tournament, and that’s what we’ve been building for all year,” Twins coach Robb Quelland said. “It will show how good we are compared to the top teams in the state right now.”

After playing 61 innings in six days, the Twins had five days off heading into the Palmer games.

Quelland said the bats were a little off, but the Twins still managed 10 hits in the first game.

Joey Becher was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Josh Darrow was 2 for 3, Calvin Hills was 2 for 4 with a run, Tyler Covey was 2 for 3 with two runs and Matthew Daugherty had a pair of runs.

On the mound, Becher pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs, Gavin Petterson pitched three innings and yielded an earned run, and Darrow gave up an unearned run in an inning.

In the second game, the Twins scored 11 runs on only four hits.

Becher had two hits, while Hills and Justice Miller each added one. Hills and Becher had two RBIs, while Hills, Petterson and Miller each scored two runs.

Daugherty gave up an earned run in three innings, while Covey pitched a scoreless two innings.

“We were able to get most of our starters, and a few relievers, in for a few innings,” Quelland said.
