Kenai Golf Report: Deveaux gets hole-in-one on No. 9 during Memorial Tournament

Posted: July 1, 2014 - 9:39pm

The Kenai Golf Course will celebrate the Fourth of July with the Red, White and Blue Tournament organized by Rich Edwards. Rich started this tournament a couple of years ago and everyone really looks forward to it. The format is a two-person scramble. Each group plays from the same tees: six red tees, six white tees and six blue tees with ALL tees in the forward position. Entry fee for this even is $75 per person or $150 per team. For more information, contact the clubhouse at 283-7500.

The Memorial Tournament was held this past weekend. Chris Murray held a sizeable lead going into day two over the field. On the second day, Doug Jung came roaring back with a 36 on the front nine, which tightened things up considerably.

In the final analysis Murray held on to a one-stroke victory over Doug Jung and Greg Harrington with a two-day net total of 149 to Jung’s and Harrington’s 150. On a card-back Jung was second and Harrington was third. Rich Edwards and Joe Deveaux tied for fourth with net scores of 151. On a card-back Rich Edwards finished fourth and Joe Deveaux finished fifth.

Other notable net scores included Gary Early with a 153 total and Skip Dove with a total of 157. Closest to the pins Saturday were won by Edwards on No. 5 with a shot of 8 feet, 11 inches. No. 9 was won by Murray with a shot of 12-9. Murray also won No. 10 with a shot of 14-2. The Gross Sidepot on Saturday was also won by Murray.

Closest to the pin on Sunday on No. 5 was won by Joe Deveaux with a shot of 28 feet and a half inch.

No. 9 was also won by Joe with a shot of 0-0 which was, indeed, a hole-in-one on the longest par 3 on the golf course. It was a high, magical shot that landed softly and rolled in the hole. It was a lot of fun to be on the tee box, watching Joe hit that shot. Congratulations, Joe, on hitting your first hole in one ever, and also thank you for the refreshments at the end of the day.

Closest to the pin on No. 10 was won by Gordon Griffin with a shot of 6-9. Pat Bowen won closest to the pin on No. 14 with 12-9. Saturday skins were won by Doug Jung, Gary Early and Steve Fickes, each with one skin. Chris Murray won three skins. Skins on Sunday were won by Rich Edwards, Ken Liedes, Aaron Cooper and Greg Harrington, each with one skin. Joe Deveaux won two skins. I would like to thank Mike Navarre and Arby’s for their sizeable donation to this Memorial event. Thanks also, Mike for your support throughout the entire golf season.
