Oilers hold off Chinooks

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks 9-7 on Tuesday in Alaska Baseball League play.

The game at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai had no scoring until the sixth inning, but then runs started streaming across the plate.

The Chinooks took a 1-0 lead after the sixth, the Oilers led 3-1 after seven and 9-1 after eight, then the Chinooks rallied for six in the ninth inning. The same two teams play tonight at 7 p.m. at Seymour Park.

The Oilers are 5-5 in the league and move to 2 1-2 games in back of the Anchorage Bucs in the American League.

The Chinooks carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning after Steven Karkenny doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on a single by Kyle Conkle.

But the Oilers rallied in the seventh. With the bases load and two outs, Jake Sandlin had a two-out triple that he drove over the head of the center fielder to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead.

In the eighth inning, the Oilers then continued to attack the Chinooks’ bullpen by pasting up six more runs.

In the ninth inning, the Chinooks took advantage of three walks and a hit batter by Mitchel Daugherty to get to him for four runs.

Tyler Gibson came on to thwart the rally, allowing one run and two hits in the ninth.

Jimmy Nesselt got the start for the Oilers and went six innings, giving up just one run despite allowing nine hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Also for the Oilers, Cody Richey pitched a scoreless inning and Nolan Sheridan gave up a run in an inning pitched. Sheridan faced just one batter in the ninth without getting an out.

On offense, Sandlin finished 2 for 4, while Alex Rubanowitz was 2 for 3.

For the Chinooks, Josh Altmann was 4 for 5, while William Arendt was 3 for 4 and Karkenny and Conkle added two hits apiece.

Notes: Tyler Painton has signed with the Oakland A’s. He left the team Monday. He was 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three games, striking out eight in 11 innings pitched.
