Goldpanners complete 5-game sweep of Oilers

The Peninsula Oilers will be glad to get home.

The Oilers finished off a winless, six-game road trip Friday with an 11-6 loss to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks at Growden Memorial Park.

The Panners sweep the five-game series from the Oilers, who have now lost seven straight overall.

The Oilers fall to 7-13 in the Alaska Baseball League, which puts them six games behind the Panners, who at 11-5 lead the American League. The Panners kept right on rolling on offense Saturday, scoring 19 runs in the second inning in a 26-7 victory over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers return to Coral Seymour Memorial Park for a five-game series with the Anchorage Bucs, starting at 2 p.m. today.

That game is Central Peninsula Hospital Family Day and Prostate Cancer Awareness Day, with free admission, plus free hot dog, chips and soda.

The Oilers will be selling “Prostate Cancer” jerseys for $150 each and auctioning off one the entire team has autographed. Proceeds go to benefit Central Peninsula Health Foundation: Prostate Cancer Fund.

In Friday’s game, the Oilers, who gave up an average of 10.2 runs per game on the road trip, again had trouble stopping the opposition.

Peninsula did fine at the plate, with all nine players collecting at least one hit and six players collecting two hits, although the Oilers did leave 12 on base.

But the pitching and defense broke down. The Oilers committed five errors, but even without the errors the pitchers gave up seven earned runs.

The Oilers led 3-0 after the second inning and 4-3 after the fourth, but Fairbanks had a 10-4 lead after six innings.

Sean Mason took the loss for the Oilers, pitching five innings and giving up six runs, three earned, on eight hits. Icezack Flemming came on to give up four earned runs in one inning of work.

Jacob Hayes finished 2 for 4 with four runs and five RBIs for the Panners, including a home run. Kris Paulino also had a home run, finishing 1 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs.

Jordan Sanford, Alex Rubanowitz, Nick Thurman, AJ Hernandez, Drake Zarate and Jeff Paschke had two hits for the Oilers.

Zarate had three RBIs, Sanford had two RBIs and Thurman had a pair of runs.
