Oilers play at Scouts Showcase

Posted: July 19, 2014 - 10:22pm

The Peninsula Oilers went 0-2 at the Alaska Scouts Showcase at Mulcahy Field in Anchorage on Friday and Saturday, falling to the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks 7-4 on Friday and the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks 7-1 on Saturday.

The Oilers have now lost five straight games, although the two Showcase games are exhibitions and don’t count in Alaska Baseball League standings. This is so the coaches can get as many players on the field as possible in front of all the scouts.

Peninsula falls to 18-20-2 overall on the season. The Oilers will participate in the All-Star game and Home Run Derby today before hosting the Pilots at 6 p.m. Monday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

Friday, the Oilers outhit the Chinooks 12-10, but Chugiak scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-all tie.

Jonathan Popadics, who ended a great day by batting 3 for 4 with a run, began the inning with a double, followed by a walk for Steven Karkenny and a single by Steven Pollex that loaded the bases. Jackson Cramer then walked to score Popadics and the go-ahead run.

Later in the inning, Mitchel Daugherty hit James Nevant with a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring another run, and Mark Lindsay’s single brought home Pollex and Cramer.

Nick Rogowski batted in Nick Thurman for the Oilers’ first run in the second inning, hitting a two-out single, but Rogowski was caught stealing second to end the inning.

Alex Rubanowitz then got the third inning off to a good start with a single that brought Josh Rose home. Ethan McGill followed that up with a single of his own that brought Jake Sandlin in to score.

In the sixth inning, Gabriel Munoz knocked out an RBI single, but that would be all Peninsula could muster.

Daniel Przeniczny (1-4) won his first game of the summer season, going two innings with zero runs on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Lance Phillips threw the final inning for the save with a single hit.

Dan Kolodin (1-2) recorded the loss for the Oilers, tossing two innings with two runs (one earned) giving up with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.

Scott Torrey got the start for two innings, giving up one run on four hits, no walks and one strikeout.

Jake Sandlin batted 3 for 4 with a run, and Ethan McGill was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI.

Saturday, the Oilers once again had problems holding down the explosive offense of the Goldpanners.

Fairbanks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Jimmy Nesselt, who worked two innings and gave up two hits and a run.

Peninsula came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Jordan Sanford led off the inning with a double, then McGill doubled with one out to score Sanford.

But Fairbanks erupted in the bottom of the inning against Cody Richey, getting to him for six runs on five hits.

Nick Rogowski, Icezack Flemming and Nolan Sheridan would close with scoreless innings for the Oilers.

Mylz Jones had two of the four hits for the Oilers. For Fairbanks, which had eight hits, Tanner Pinkston was 3 for 4 with a run and RBI.

Today is the Alaska Baseball League All-Star game and the State Farm Alaska Baseball League Home Run Derby. Both are at Mulcahy Field in Anchorage.

The Home Run Derby will start at 1 p.m. The lone representative for the Oilers in the Home Run Derby will be Gabriel Munoz.

The All-Star game will follow at 4 p.m., featuring the American Division (Alaska Goldpanners, Anchorage Bucs and Oilers) against the National Division (Anchorage Glacier Pilots, Mat-Su Miners and Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks).

The Oilers will have nine players in the All-Star game. The players are pitchers Nolan Sheridan, Chad Rieser, Tyler Gibson, Dallas DeVrieze and Shawn Mason; infielders Alex Rubanowitz and Mylz Jones; and outfielders Jordan Sanford and Jake Sandlin.
