The American Legions Twins got back on track by sweeping Bartlett on Saturday in Anchorage.

The Twins beat the Golden Bears 6-0 in a nine-inning league game and 17-11 in a seven-inning league game.

On Friday, the Twins had dropped a 11-9 league decision in Chugiak for a three-game losing streak.

The Twins are 2-3 in the league and 5-3 overall after the loss.

Friday, head coach Hector Rivera was feeling a lot better after losing to the Mustangs, last year’s Legion state tourney runner-up and this year’s high school state champ, than he was after losing two league games to Kodiak on June 13.

“After that debacle we had last weekend, being down 9-2 in the second inning and coming back and tying up the game, it’s a good group of kids and I still have very high expectations,” Rivera said.

The Twins got off to a slow start against the Mustangs. Kyle Johnson pitched the first 1 1-3 innings and allowed nine runs, but six were unearned.

Klayton Justice then came on for 2 2-3 innings of scoreless relief and allowed the Twins to get back in the game.

Joey Becher then pitched the final two innings and gave up the two runs that would be the difference.

Rivera said everybody chipped in on offense. Tommy Bowe had a two-run double, while Josh Darrow got a hit with the bases loaded for an RBI, and Calvin Hills also had a hit and an RBI.

In the 6-0 victory over Bartlett, Matthew Daugherty pitched the first six innings and gave up three hits while striking out four and walking none.

“The best thing he did was he had control,” Rivera said. “He did not walk anybody and when you walk a batter, that’s what hurts you.”

Justice Miller pitched two innings and gave up one hit while striking out one and walking none. Klayton Justice finished up with an inning that had a hit and a strikeout.

On offense, Tommy Bowe was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a home run. Jacob Conver was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

“After that game (Friday) night, even though we lost we played good,” Rivera said. “I think the guys fed on it and came out here today and showed up.”

In the 17-11 victory, the bats came alive for the Twins.

Cody Quelland was 3 for 6, Josh Darrow was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Justice Miller was 3 for 5 with an RBI, Kenny Griffin was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and Conver was 4 for 4 with four RBIs.

Johnson pitched the first three innings and yielded six runs, while Tyler Covey pitched 2 2-3 innings and gave up two runs, and Calvin Hills pitched 1 1-3 innings and gave up three runs.

The Valley team visits Coral Seymour Memorial Park on Tuesday, with a noon league game and 3 p.m. nonleague game.
