Bird Homestead Golf Course report

With the season coming to an end you must squeeze in a round of golf before the snow hits. Funny River golf course is located on mile 11.8 on Funny River road. We have clubs as well as golf carts available for rent. It is amazing how fun the sport of golf can be once you try it. Stop by for a round, or just to hit a bucket at the range. Bird Homestead has a weekly calendar that stays the same every week to accommodate all golfers: Mondays: $1 a hole — all day; Tuesdays: Men’s Night — starts at 6:30 p.m; Wednesdays: Ladies night — starts at 6:30 p.m; Thursdays: Bring a friend for buy a round, get a round free

Ladies Night

The ladies finally lucked out with beautiful weather last Wednesday night. The slight wind was perfect for keeping away the mosquitos. The triple threat of Kelsey Slough, Faith Link and Pat Bird were the team on top this week, with a score of 35. Not only did Kelsey win first place she also won long drive, with her remarkable drive on hole No. 5. Susan Ellis hit a precise putt from an outrageous 21 inches on hole No. 3 winning her long putt. Connie Orth hit an amazing tee shot from No. 8, landing her less than six feet from the pin.

Ladies night begins at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday night. Skill level is not important to the ladies, it’s all about fun. Join us Wednesday night for an eventful, fun round of golf.

Men’s Night

There were 28 men that showed up for Men’s Night Tuesday. The first place team came in with a score of 34. The team on top was Justin Bird, Greg Harrington, Chris Hafer, and Scott Sundberg. After a three way chip off, the second place team was Rob Robertson, James Kozel, Mike Gardner, and Joe Deveaux. Long Drive went to Aaron Blackburn. Kevin O’Fallen won pure birdie for the night, and Rob Fraser landed only 16 feet away from the pin on hole No. 8, winning him closest to on Hole No. 8.

Bird Birthday Recap

The celebration of the Birds was a success at last Saturday’s tournament. The winning team last Saturday came in with a score of 199 after 18 holes. That score may seem extremely high, but with the format scramble, shamble, waltz, it was the first place score. The team that had this score was the team of Rob Robertson, Cuz, Mike Gardner, and Jeff Gillman. Long drive for women went to Dotty Hackett. Long drive for men went to Brandon Wold. Closest to on No. 6 for men went to Dan Hackett, and on No. 8 Brandon Wold. Sylvia won closest to the pin on hole No. 6 with a tee shot only 10 1-2 feet away from the pin.

Upcoming Tournaments

Fall Classic

This Saturday, August 23, is the 10th annual Fall Classic. All proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Caribou Hills Cabin Hoppers. This is an 18-hole, scramble format. Bring your own 4-man team, or we will put one together for you. Registration closes at 9 a.m., shotgun start at 10 a.m., with a pig roast dinner and ceremony immediately following the tournament. Come out and support a great cause. For more information or to sign up (teams are filling quickly) call the clubhouse at 260-4653.

Challenger Learning Center
Golf Tournament

Next Saturday, August 30, is the first annual CLC golf tournament. This tournament is a nine hole tournament and all proceeds benefit the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska. Food and prizes immediately after the tournament. Registration ends at 10 a.m., tee off at 11 a.m. This tournament is a fun tournament for a good cause, it will be best-ball format, along with some wacky different things at each hole. Fun Fact Thursday

When Alan Sheppard was on the moon, he hit a golf ball and drove it 2,400 feet, nearly one half a mile.
