The Homer baseball team opened its season Tuesday night with a 10-2 win over Kenai Central at the Kenai Little League fields.

Kyle Johnson went the whole seven innings on the mound for Homer with six strikeouts, five hits and four walks. Kenai’s Tim Zoda started for the Kards and was eventually pulled for Ellery Steffensen.

Homer coach Rich Sonnen said he was pleased to see eight of his players get hits.

“When you have eight guys getting hits, it’s a good thing,” he said.

After Homer scored seven runs in the second inning, Steffensen locked down on the mound for Kenai with three scoreless innings. The Kards scored one run in the first and one in the fourth, while the Mariners brought two home in the first, seven in the second and one in the sixth.

Kenai hosts Kodiak on May 5 at 7 p.m.
