Have you been out to Birch Ridge Golf Course this summer? If not, you need to. Our greens have never rolled better on June 18! They’re comparable to anything you’ll find in the Soldotna-Kenai area.

Birch Ridge hosted its annual Junior Golf Championships on Thursday. Katelin Richards, Anika Richards and Keeley Sundberg were age group winners on the girls side. Anika Richards, just 11, posted the low score with a sparkling 41. Anika is good at golf, really good.

On the boys side, Samuel Klein, Shane Sundberg and Max “Mercedes” Dye came away with winning totals. Max posted an impressive 77 over 18 holes.

We’re excited to co-host the Alaska Golf Association two-person jackpot this weekend. The event will be held at Kenai Golf Course on Saturday. The final round will take place Sunday morning at Birch Ridge. It’s not too late to sign up for this very entertaining tournament. Golfers pair together to play six holes of best ball, scramble and alternate shot each day. Call the golf course for more details.

Old Folks Golf

The sensational seniors came out it force Monday morning ready for battle. Tim “Doc” Bowser, Steve Hammarstrom and Pat “Mayday” McElroy shared low-net honors. Darell “Cool Hand” Jelsma hit the shot of the season at the sixth to take closest to. Tom “Loveable Lefty” Hodel placed his ball near the eighth cup to best the competition. Mark Hutton rolled in the long putt at the finishing hole.

Tuesday Morning Ladies League

It was a busy day for the Tuesday ladies. Chiya “Pet” Bazan and Susan Jelsma both had chip-ins of which Tiger Woods would be envious. Missy McCown had a chip-in at the ninth to cap off an eagle two at the final green! Denise Cox posted a birdie at the first on her way to low net. Margaret Stanley showed off her ball-striking prowess capturing low gross.

Thursday Night Couples

Trena Richardson filled in for Lori Weimer and paired with Charlie Weimer to dominate the couples field last Thursday. Half the pot went to the team with the fewest recorded putts. Charlie and Trena combined to take that prize as well. We’re not able to confirm that a pencil eraser was used during play. George and Sue Stein, Gary Dawkins and Lori Riggs-Bishop, and Darell and Susan Jelsma had a great time exercising along with the Weimer-Richardson duo.

Joke of the Week

Alex comes home after his regular Saturday golf game and his wife, Amanda, asks why he doesn’t include John Gumby in the games anymore. Alex responds, “Would you want to play with a guy who regularly cheats, swears outrageously over everything, lies about his score, and has nothing good to say about anyone else on the course?”

“Of course I wouldn’t,” states Amanda.

“Well,” mutters Alex, “neither does John Gumby.”
