There was a rowdy bunch of women who showed up for a fun Ladies Night. Coming in first was Linda Robertson, Margie Ubben and Phyllis Cousins. Judi Artman crushed her drive winning her longest drive. Ladies night is every Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. We enjoy playing with new ladies, even if you are brand new to golf.

Men’s Night

There were 25 men who showed up for men’s night. First place with an incredible score of minus-3 was the team of Chris Rich, Terry Johnson, JE Wells and John Pollock. In second place after a chip off was the team of Aaron Blackburn, James Kozel and Jeff Gillman with a minus-2. Aaron Blackburn had a beautiful chip, beating out Mike Fastabends awesome chip. On hole No. 9, JE Wells crushed his drive winning long drive. John Crapps played a solo golf game on hole No. 5, winning pure Birdie. Rich Harman hit an incredible tee shot on hole No. 8, winning closest to the pin, and on hole No. 6, Scott Sundberg also hit a great tee shot, winning closest to the pin on hole No. 6. Men’s night is every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Junior Lessons

As junior lessons are wrapping up I would like to thank the Bird Homestead Golf Association for donating sets of clubs, and a BIG thank you to Tom Walsh for donating his time to teach these juniors golf.

We had three standout juniors this summer: Blake, Makayla and Riley. Blake “Little man” Ferreira was always fun to be around at the golf course. Not only did he improve tremendously, he was always a comedian on the course, there was never a dull moment around Little Man. Makayla “6-iron” Raemaker went from having a hockey swing to a smooth golf swing. This was her second summer in the program and this summer she was given her own set of golf clubs because of the gracious donation from the association. Our last stand out junior was Riley “heels” Stimmel. Riley has so much determination, he really learned how tough golf is, he never gave up, continued to come to every lesson despite being frustrated at times and he is now a great junior golfer. The association also set Riley up with his first set of golf clubs, so he can continue playing the awesome sport of golf.

Upcoming tournaments

This Saturday, August 1, is the Kenai Peninsula Builders Association Tournament. It is an 18-hole, four-man team scramble. Please call the clubhouse for more information 260-4653.

Fun Fact Thursday

While playing in Atlantic City, N.J., in 1889, Ab Smith hit a shot he defined as a “bird of a shot.” His description ultimately led to one of the game’s most popular terms, which golfers regularly aim for — “birdie.”
